Summary: The novel Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny follows the story of Corwin, a prince of Amber. In the start of the novel Corwin does not know who he is as he has been in a devastating car crash. Following this he escapes from the hospital, where he was being forcibly sedated, to the house of his sister where he learns of the trumps and of his brother Eric’s plan to crown himself king. After this Corwin travels through the shadows (which is the same as going to another dimension) so that he can get to a place that can restore his memory. After this Corwin with the help of one of his brothers gathers an army to assault amber and keep Eric from becoming king. Unfortunately, the attack failed and Corwin is captured and forced into crowning Eric as king. Many long years later Corwin is able to escape from his prison and into the shadows to devise another way to get the kingdom back.

Evaluation: The novel Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny is an overall excellent read. The author captures the lush beauty of different environments and the despair that is ever present throughout his novel. His characters are well rounded and there is no one person whose intentions are purely good or evil. In addition to this Zelazny did a great job in creating his world of Amber and although it is not real, it feels like it is. Finally this book is packed with action that keeps the reader on their toes not knowing what to expect next from the characters.

    Rating: 5/5

The Nine Princes of Amber by Rodger Zelazny, is a classic book about inner family assassinations and power grabbing schemes in a world where every reality is a shadow of a greater land….. Amber. Memory damaged by his family’s actions, Corwin prince of Amber wakes to find himself without any knowledge of who he is and being held in a hospital indefinitely. He finds himself running for aid to the same family that destroyed his memory to repair it by walking the pattern that created the world. This pattern gives his family super-human abilities to walk between worlds and bend them to their will. But with their father disappeared and the throne nearly held by one of his least favorite brothers Corwin has to lead a desperate assault to try and wrest the crown away. Will he become another dead sibling in a family war or will he manage to overthrow his brother?

I would give this a solid 4 out of 5 stars, Rodger Zelazny does an amazing job of combining an interesting setting in a world where one can walk between worlds and find any world they so wish or where princes and princesses can teleport to each other by being pulled through a card which contains the face of a family member. He combines a feuding family trying to settle old debts and at the same time jockey for power and the throne with family seeking to preserve the bloodline of a royal family. While this book is not on the same level as Tolkien or Robert Jordan it contains a fantastic array of magic, sword fighting, fantastic worlds, car chases and jail breaks.

This book is a perfect pleasure read for anyone who loves fantasy books or fantasy-sci-fi books. I would also recommend this book to people who like mysteries and cliff hangers.
