Summary: Colton Burpo, a young four year old boy, undergoes an emergency appendectomy (a ruptured appendix and an abscess) on March 5, 2003. Only a week passes before he has a second surgery, this time a celiotomy (to drain the abscesses). With Colton’s surgeries and pain, his family’s stress and financial struggles, Todd Burpo decides to take the family to South Dakota to visit their cousins. This is where Colton begins to tell of his encounters in heaven. Todd being a pastor, Colton fascinates him. Using Colton’s words, Todd retells his son’s story in this book Heaven Is for Real.
Evaluation: Although you may or may not have the same religious beliefs as the Burpo’s, I would still recommend this story to you. Todd Burpo tells his son’s heart touching story, the only one I have truly enjoyed reading this year. It’s a pretty quick read, but thoughtfully written and loaded with Colton’s stories. Heaven Is for Real will change the way you think, offering you the opportunity to see and believe like a child.
