The graphic novel Drama tells the story of seventh grade set designer Callie and her various love interests during her school’s production of “Moon over Mississippi.” She starts out liking (and kissing!) Greg, but he gets cold feet, and the show must go on, so Callie channels her energy into her set design and stage crew responsibilities. During the production, she meets new people and makes new friends with intriguing potential. Sometimes the real drama happens backstage.
This quick and easy read made me smile in several places. I appreciated how Callie suffered several setbacks in her quest for love; ultimately, she may discover that the theater itself holds her truest love of all. In spite of its Junior High setting, Drama may appeal to older readers as it provides positive portrayals of both gay teens and theater culture.
