One Response to “Black Elk Speaks, John G. Neihardt”

  1. Rosamund D. Says:

As a young boy Black Elk witnesses the slow destruction of his people. Before the white people interfered with the Native Americans they were peaceful. But as the white people murder and take away everything that they hold dear, they slowly turn into the crazy savages that the white settlers saw them as. Witness a story like no other as Black Elk, at nine years old, is given a vision from the spirits of how to save his people from the whites. He becomes a medicine man for his tribe, the Oglala Sioux. Through sacrifice and spiritual power, in a race against time, he tries to fulfill the vision and his purpose on earth.

Black Elk Speaks is a fantastic read. Everyone needs to be aware of Black Elk’s story and what happened to the Native Americans through their eyes, not through a textbook’s statistics of deaths. It consists of well written, touching stories, that will make you squirm, cry and question yourself.
    A must read!
