One Response to “American Caesar, William Manchester”

  1. Dalton H. Says:

Summary: Douglas MacArthur served in World War I and was in command of the Pacific in World War II. He was one of the most decorated men in United States history and was either loved or hated by the people. MacArthur came from a military family. Douglas attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and went on to become one of the best commanders in United States history. Douglas first went to the Philippines after his graduation from West Point. In World War I, MacArthur was known for his unconventional behavior. He preferred to be on the battlefield. Instead of spending his time at the command headquarters during invasions, he would join his men. When the Korean conflict began, MacArthur was in command. He eventually was forced to quit when the president asked him to, because he wanted to invade China with nukes.

Evaluation: Very long but very thorough, and seems to be historically accurate. I would definitely recommend this book to people who love history, American history, war history or people who like reading long books. It wasn’t the most fast-paced book, but it has plenty of details and sources, if I was to write a paper on MacArthur I would use this book for my sources.

    Rating: 4.5

Recommendations: Hour of Peril by Daniel Stashower, MacArthur by Richard B Frank
