Crossing the Continent: 1527-1540 is a historic biography of the life of Esteban Dorantes (whom is also known as Estevanico, Estebanico, and Esteban the Moor). He was born in Morocco, and as a youth was enslaved by the Portuguese, and then was later sold to a Spanish man named Andres Dorantes. In 1527 he was taken on the Spanish Narvaez expedition for the purpose of colonizing in Florida. He was one of the four survivors of 300 men. Esteban later went on to become the founder of current day New Mexico.
I enjoyed learning about this expedition and the life of Esteban. However I did wish that the book described his young life and what it was like when he was captured. The author did mention that he wanted to keep the book as factual as possible and how hard it was to find evidence that was reliable. Other than that, the book was great.
